Dear Subscribers,
Due to our troubles with earthlink, the etree has switched programs. This happened a bit faster than we thought it would. We hope this will enable our earthlink subscribers to receive our postings. It seems that all of you will be receiving an anouncment of the new mailing list which has options including the ability to recieve the postings in a "digest" form which is once a day. This is good news. However, it isalso a little confusing. Please bear with us as we too figure it out.

From: Nancy Riddle nancy_riddle@berkeley.k12.ca.us
Vice President, Berkeley School Board and ’04 Parent,

Dear Class of ’04
Yesterday’s headlines confirmed what many Berkeley High School
seniors already know, the State of California has broken a forty year
promise to accept all eligible applicants to the UC system. Over 8,700
were turned away. There was also a marked decline in the acceptance of
underrepresented minority students. I have heard that BHS students
applying to UC Santa Cruz have been particularly hard hit. UCSC is
historically one of your most popular choices. UCSC is the only UC that
had a significant increase in applications this year, and, therefore, had a much higher percentage of rejections of eligible students. They
rejected over 7,000 freshman and about half of those were eligible.
Yesterday’s headlines focused on the UC system but admissions to our state colleges have suffered a similar fate and our community college system is struggling under massive budget cuts.

Last week I received a notice from Senator Don Perata's office about
a series of "town hall meetings" on this issue throughout the state.
Unfortunately, the closest one is in San Jose and it’s in the middle of a school day. I spoke at length yesterday with Amy Pierce-Costa, District Director for Senator Perata. They would very much like to receive written testimonials (emails are fine) from students who have been caught up in this mess.

Email: Amy.Costa@SEN.CA.GOV
Mailing Address:

Class of ’04, your individual stories are powerful. I encourage you to
bear witness. The Board would appreciate receiving your stories as well.

Mailing Address:

I have already heard informally from several students and I
appreciate that some of your stories are very personal and I will, of
course, respect your requests for anonymity if you prefer.

With warm regards,
Nancy Riddle

SAT REQUIREMENTS FOR CLASS of 2006
Ilene Abrams
<iabrams@berkeley.k12.ca.us>

The College Board has developed a new SAT test which will first be given to
the class of 2006. Like, the current SAT, it will include verbal (to be
called critical reading) and math sections. However, the new SAT will add a
writing section. The writing section will include both multiple choice
questions and a student-written essay. To accommodate the new writing
section, test time will be extended to 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Other changes to the test include:
The analogy questions in the verbal part of the test will be eliminated;
Short reading passages will be added;
The math section will include some Algebra 2 questions.

The new test will first be given in March of 2005. The October 2004 PSAT
will model all of the changes to the test, except that it will not include
the new writing section.

ACT will offer an optional writing section for those students who wish to
take it.

As a result of these test changes, the UC system has modified its test
requirements. Beginning with the class of 2006, these requirements will be:

1. The new SAT (or the ACT with Writing). The old SAT test will not be
accepted for admission.

2. Two SAT II Subject Tests in two different subject areas: history/social
science, English literature, mathematics, laboratory science or language
other than English. The UC system will NOT accept the SAT II writing test
or the Math IC to meet this requirement. The following SAT II Subject Tests
can be used to fulfill the requirement: Literature, U.S. History, World
History, Math IIC, Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics, French Reading, French
Reading with Listening, German Reading, German Reading with Listening,
Spanish Reading, Spanish Reading with Listening, Modern Hebrew Reading,
Italian Reading, Latin Reading with Listening, Japanese Reading with
Listening, Korean Reading with Listening, and Chinese Reading with
Listening. If a student takes more than two tests, the University will use
the best two scores from different subject areas.

I recommend that students in the class of 2006 who are planning to attend a
four year college or university take the new SAT in March 2006. Students
may also take the SAT in May of 2006 or the ACT with writing. I also
recommend that they take one or more SAT II tests in June of 2006 if they
are planning to apply to colleges which require them, including the UCs.
Students who are now completing a science class or an advanced level of
foreign language may take the SAT II in these subjects on June 5, 2005. The
regular registration deadline for that test is April 29th.

If you have further questions, please consult the College Board website at
www.collegeboard.com or e-mail me at <iabrams@berkeley.k12.ca.us>.

COLLEGE/CAREER Advisor
Ilene Abrams
This is a corrected version.
4/23/04

****corrected text****

The College Board has developed a new SAT test which will first be given to
the class of 2006. Like, the current SAT, it will include verbal (to be
called critical reading) and math sections. However, the new SAT will add a
writing section. The writing section will include both multiple choice
questions and a student-written essay. To accommodate the new writing
section, test time will be extended to 3 hours and 35 minutes.

Other changes to the test include:
The analogy questions in the verbal part of the test will be eliminated;
Short reading passages will be added;

****I recommend that students in the class of 2006 who are planning to
attend a four year college or university take the new SAT in MARCH 2005.
Students may also take the SAT in May of 2005 or the ACT with writing. I
also recommend that they take one or more SAT II tests in June of 2005 if
they are planning to apply to colleges which require them, including the
UCs. Students who are now completing a science class or an advanced level
of foreign language may take the SAT II in these subjects on June 5, 2004.
The regular registration deadline for that test is April 29th. ****

If you have further questions, please consult the College Board website at
http://www.collegeboard.com or e-mail me at iabrams@berkeley.k12.ca.us.

contact: Mark Coplan [mailto:Mark_Coplan@berkeley.k12.ca.us]

BUSD School Board Director Terry Doran submitted this letter to the editor
of the Berkeley Daily Planet in response to the article about the new
Berkeley High School Food Court (April 13, 2004). He has requested that
I go ahead and distribute it through the Etrees at this time.

Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer

Please accept this letter to the editor.
Thank you in advance.
Terry Doran - Berkeley School Board Member

BHS Cafeteria
Editors, Daily Planet:
A new restaurant opened in Berkeley Monday, April 12th. 400 customers showed
up. Who would think this is a bad thing?
Only the Daily Planet. After 14 years of leaving the Berkeley High School
Campus at lunch, out of necessity because there was no cafeteria, 400 brave
students tried something different, a brand new school cafeteria. But
judging from the
Daily Planet headline of April 14, "Most Ignore New BHS Cafeteria", you
would think opening a new school cafeteria was a bad move on the part of
the School District. 400 students didn't add to the flood of traffic in
downtown Berkeley. 400 students received a low cost, nutritious, healthy
lunch. And maybe, just maybe, it will catch on with more students, over
time. What a terrible situation for Berkeley High School and the City.
Anyway, so reads the Daily Planet.
Terry Doran - School Board member

Note from the Public Information Officer: The number of students signing
up for school lunches at Berkeley High is growing daily. The District is
very pleased with the success of the Food Court, and the numbers have been
consistent with our own expectations from the first day. Samples of the
Food Court pizza will be given out at the BHS Open House & Ribbon Cutting
tomorrow, Sunday April 25th. The ceremony unveiling the $37,000,000,00
new buildings will be from 1pm to 1:30 p.m., with tours and entertainment
until 5 p.m.
