Message-ID: <20080121193105.31F09126FB6@idiom.com> PLEASE DO NOT REPLY to the etree, contact Janet Huseby On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 5 and 6, we need close to 30 people EACH day in order to administer the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to the entire 10th grade. If you can possibly help during one of the three shifts, please volunteer. As a bonus to sophomore parents, this is a rare opportunity to observe ALL of your student's colleagues in one glance. Each day is divided into three shifts: 1. 7:15 to 8:30 (The first shift will be in charge of making sure each student has the proper test and answer sheet--a massive logistical challenge.) 2. 8:30 to noon (The second shift will monitor the test and start collecting and organizing the completed tests.) 3. Noon to 3.(The third shift will continue to monitor and organize the returned tests.) I will have approximately 10 parking passes which I will distribute on a first come first served basis though we are hoping for more than 10 per shift per day. If you can help, please let me know what day and what time at jhuseby@pacbell.net The testing will take place in several locations. The tests are not timed. As students complete their test they return to the regular schedule. All students take the test both days. The exit exam is offered once to sophomores, twice to juniors and three times to seniors. Currently, all students MUST pass the exam in order to receive a California high school diploma. If a sophomore passes the test, they do not have to take it again. The exam will start at 7:30. Thank you dear community. Message-ID: <20080121194428.E98A0126FA3@idiom.com> CONTACT: Janet Huseby jhuseby@pacbell.net Last week the 2008-2009 Course Catalogue and Choice Brochure was mailed to all families with children in the 8th grade at King, Longfellow and Willard. In addition, a parent volunteer took packets to Prospect Sierra and Tehiya for distribution. If you have, or know of, an incoming 9th grade student (current 8th grader) not at one of the five mentioned schools, please come by the front office and we will give you a packet with the catalogue and choice brochure. This month sees the beginning of a series of meetings for 8th graders and their parents or guardians. Below is a list of dates and other information of interest to prospective families currently enrolled in the BUSD and not yet enrolled in the district. Private school families may attend one of the meetings at the BUSD public schools but they may not select their child's course at the time as the system is different. 1. Next steps for families coming from Longfellow, King, Willard: Representatives from Berkeley High School will visit each of the three BUSD middle schools over the next several weeks to conduct the scheduling process. This process includes a daytime student assembly where current BHS students will discuss their experiences with middle school students. Later that evening, administrators and counselors will give a brief presentation in both English and Spanish which will review the program choices at BHS. During that same week, high school counselors will come to the middle schools to guide students through the course request and program selection process. Willard Middle School Tuesday, January 29, 2008 10:00 a.m. Student Assembly 6:00 p.m.-6:45 pm Curriculum Presentations in Spanish 7:00 p.m.-7:45 pm Curriculum Presentations in English Thursday, January 31-Friday, February 1, 2008 Online scheduling for 8th grade students at Willard. Next Steps for families coming from non district 8th grades Students coming to BHS from middle schools outside the B.U.S.D. must first register with the admissions office and then may attend one of the following scheduling sessions to be held in the Berkeley High Library: TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2008 -6:30 p.m. THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2008 -6:30 p.m. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2008 -6:30 p.m. 3. How to register at Berkeley High (Current BUSD middle school students do not have to register-they are automatically rolled over to Berkeley High.) Starting on March 18, 2008 Parents/Guardians must first enroll their students at the BUSD Admissions Office located at 1835 Allston Way (644-6504). The Admissions Office is open for enrollment Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., (closed 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.) Parents must bring the student's BIRTH CERTIFICATE and THREE PROOFS OF BERKELEY RESIDENCY. Proof of Berkeley residence - any THREE from the following list of CURRENT documentation, including at least one from category "d" that is imprinted with the name and Berkeley address of the parent/guardian, will be required to establish proof of residency: A) California Driver's License or ID B) Current bank statement C) Action letter from Social Services, a letter from the State Office for Medi-Cal, a letter from the employer on company letterhead, or a paycheck stub D) PG&E bill, phone bill (non-cellular), EBMUD bill, garbage bill or cable bill Please note. It takes two business days for the Admissions Office to complete your enrollment and give you the registration packet for Berkeley High. REGISTRATION AT BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL: After receiving a school assignment/registration packet from the Admissions Office, parents must then register their student at Berkeley High School. Berkeley High Registration will take place at the BHS Administration Office, located at 1980 Allston Way, (corner of Allston Way and Milvia.) It is necessary to bring your student's (1) immunization record (2) birth certificate and (3) an unofficial copy of their school transcript from the preceding school as well as the completed registration packet to register at BHS. Keep in mind that while students from non-BUSD schools will not make program/course selections until late March, all students, regardless of when they make their selections, will be run in the school's placement lottery at the same time. 4. An invaluable source of information for our school is the Berkeley High etree. This list-serve passes on the Student Daily Bulletin, the College Advisors Bulletin, and much more. To subscribe, send an email to BHS-request@idiom.com with one word only in the subject line: 'subscribe' . If you are a prospective parent, the etree can be overwhelming. Safi Kariv, a current BHS parent of a senior, has taken it upon himself to put together an etree for prospective parents which features posts he culls from the regular etree as well as information on registering and other items of interest. He calls this listserve the 08/12 Prospective Freshmen etree. If you are interested in signing on, send an email to Safi at zkariv@yahoo.com with subscribe in the subject line. 5. Last year The Berkeley High School Development Fund published a collection of Berkeley High college essays called True Admissions. All the essays were written by Berkeley High seniors. True Admissions raised over $8,000 for the College and Career Center-it also attracted the attention of Cody's Books and Stone Bridge Press who together have brought out a second edition under a new name: The Berkeley Book of College Essays. The book is appealing both to students who are contemplating writing their own college essays and to adults who are interested in the stories behind a large urban high school. There are still a few copies of True Admissions for sale in the Berkeley High College and Career Center at the BHS Front Desk. The new book, The Berkeley Book of College Essays which includes 12 new BHS essays is available at Cody's and on line at Amazon.com. 6. The "touring season" for prospective students runs from October to March. The small group tours leave the Front Desk at 9:30 a.m. most mornings and are by reservation only. They last about an hour. The tours walk by classrooms--many of which have open doors --but they do not go into rooms for observation. The tours are not "orientation tours." (There are wonderful student-led tours for our incoming students in August.) The fall and early spring tours are directed towards parents who are deciding if Berkeley High is the appropriate school for their child. Prospective students are welcome but ONLY if accompanied by their parent or guardian. To make a reservation, please contact Janet Huseby, BHS Volunteer Coordinator at jhuseby@pacbell.net. Let her know how many people are in your party and what days you are available. 7. Many people have asked if they could visit Berkeley High on their own or if their student could "shadow" a current student. This is not possible. The school is focused on the education and security of our currently enrolled students. We are simply too large a school to accommodate unsupervised visitors. Each bus will visit two local colleges. For instance, one trip will take in UC Davis and Sacramento State. Our college counselors want our students to be focused and excited about higher education in their 10th grade year-when there is still time to sign up and take the challenging high schools courses needed to qualify for a four year college. But, as with anything in a school our size, these visits are a large undertaking. We need community support to pull it off. On Wednesday January 30, two more chaperones are needed. On Thursday, January 31, three chaperones are needed. On Friday, Feb. 8, two more chaperones are needed. The tours will leave Berkeley High at 7:30 am and return by 4:30 pm. It's a long day, but we need to start early to be able to take two college tours, eat lunch and hear one admissions overview. In addition to parents and guardian chaperones, two teachers and two counselors will be on each tour. COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF JUNIORS ? Tuesday, February 5, 6:30-8:30 pm in the Berkeley High library. Enter at 1980 Allston Way. Angela Price and I will provide an overview of all aspects of the college admissions process. Ms. Price and I will be speaking to the junior English classes at the beginning of February. Following the presentations, juniors will be able to sign up for individual appointments with their College Advisor. FOR SENIORS *CAL STATE DEADLINES - February 1 is the last day to file applications for admission to the following Cal State campuses: Channel Islands, Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors), Fresno, Fullerton (open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing) and Stanislaus. March 1 is the application for these campuses: Dominguez Hills, East Bay, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Sacramento State, and Monterey Bay. After March 1, due to budget cuts, you will not be able to apply for admission to any Cal State campus for the fall 2008 term. If you and need help with your application, please see me or Ms. Price as soon as possible. FINANCIAL AID ? Now is the time to work on your application for financial aid. All colleges require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). I strongly recommend that you apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . This is the only official site for filling out the FAFSA. Beware of other sites that charge money to fill out the FAFSA. In order to file electronically, you will need two PIN numbers ? one for one parent and one for the student. These are your electronic signatures. You can apply for the PIN numbers at www.pin.ed.gov If you haven?t done so already, I recommend that you do so now. You can start the FAFSA while you are waiting to receive your PIN numbers. FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS ? We will be holding workshops on filling out the FAFSA both before and after school in the Berkeley High library. The next two workshops are: Thurs., February 7,?7:30 am?? Evening Workshop, Thursday, January 24, 6:30 pm, BHS library Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have enough computers for everyone. Prior to the workshop, pick up the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary information. For a complete list of workshops, go to http://bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=workshops . CHECK FOR FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES AND REQUIRED FORMS FOR EACH SCHOOL ? Although all colleges require the FAFSA, some schools require additional forms. Financial aid deadlines vary from school to school. Some schools have January or early February deadlines. The deadline to file the FAFSA for all UC?s, Cal States and community colleges is March 2, although I recommend that you file sooner if at all possible. The financial deadline for each college can be found on its website or by calling the financial aid office. Make a list of each school?s financial aid deadline (some are as early as January 15) and the forms they require. We have a form available in the College/Career Center to help you keep track of this information. If you don?t file by the deadline, you are likely to get less financial aid. The most important thing is meeting the deadline, not having the exactly correct information. You can always go back and update your information once you complete your tax forms. CAL GRANTS ? Cal Grants are free money from the state of California based on the student?s GPA and family income. The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy ? just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2 listing a California college to receive the information and fill out the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221. This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Deadline to turn in the form is January 30. MIDYEAR REPORTS ? IF YOU HAVEN?T TURNED THESE IN, PLEASE DO SO BY THE END OF THE WEEK! If you applied to any schools which require your first semester grades as part of the admissions process, you must turn in the Mid-Year Report form and a completed Transcript Request Form with the words ?Mid-Year Report? written across the top, paper-clipped to a number 10 business sized envelope with one first class stamp addressed to the Office of Admissions of the college with a return address of BHS, 1980 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704. The deadline to turn these in to D173 or D221 was Wednesday, January 16. You must have a separate envelope for each college requiring your first semester grades. This is not necessary for any UC campuses, but some Cal State campuses are requiring a copy of your first semester grades. If you missed the presentation on filling out the FAFSA on December 4, you may sign up to borrow the DVD for up to 2 nights. Please e-mail a request to Angela Price (angela_price@berkeley.k12.ca.us) along with your student?s name, and she will let you know when it is available. Senior families only, please. SAT/ACT TEST DATES ? January 29 is the regular registration deadline for the March 1 SAT tests. March 7 is the regular registration deadline for the April 12 ACT test. Subject tests are not offered on this test date. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221. The PTSA Newsletter is published approximately every 6 weeks and includes articles supplied by the BHS administration, the PTSA and various school and community groups. One of the big bonuses of the job is that you get to meet with Principal Jim Slemp and PTSA and other parent leaders on a regular basis ? you?ll be one of the most well-informed people in the school. Following the presentations, juniors will be able to sign up for individual appointments with their College Advisor. FOR SENIORS CAL STATE DEADLINES - February 1 is the last day to file applications for admission to the following Cal State campuses: Channel Islands, Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors), Fresno, Fullerton (open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing) and Stanislaus. The next two workshops are: Thurs., February 7, 7:30 am *Wed., February 13, 3:30 pm Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have enough computers for everyone. Prior to the workshop, pick up the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary information. For a complete list of workshops, go to http:// bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=workshops . Message-ID: Berkeley Bowl Shoppers, Peet's Drinkers, and Five Star Video Renters......we need you!! The BHS Development Group purchases coupons from the merchants above. We buy in bulk and they give us a discount (4 - 20%). We sell the scrip to you at face value and make money!! When you buy scrip, you get dollar for dollar what you pay for. The money we earn from the sale of scrip comes from the merchants, not you! During the first week of every month, a team of parents delivers scrip to almost 100 households all over Berkeley! THANK-YOU to our monthly subscribers.....you are the backbone of this effort!! So far this year, we've sold over $230,000 in scrip and earned over $11,000. If you are "a regular" at the Bowl, Peet's or Five Star, please give scrip a try. To sign up or get more information, contact Linda Safarik-Tong at bhs_scrip@yahoo.com or leave a message at 524-5544.
