BHS Leadership, working with our parent volunteers and the League of Women Voters, is holding a mock election for BHS students tomorrow Tuesday, January 29. The polling station will be the Community Theater Foyer. The polls will be open from 9:00-3:45-including BHS lunch time! We are hoping social studies teachers will bring their students to vote and others will drop by when free to vote. Students will register, vote, and receive an "I Voted" sticker. Students will vote for the presidential candidate of their choice from any of the parties and will vote yes or no on 3 ballot measures. All teachers and parents - please encourage your students to vote. We need to have more young people voting. Currently in California, of likely voters 62% are over 45, 77% are homeowners, 73% are college graduates, 72% are white, 14% are Latino, 6% are Asian, 5% are African-American. While only one in three of California's adults was born in the US, 90% of likely voters are natives. Do these statistics sound representative of the state population? If you have volunteered to help at the election, please come to the front desk in the admin building to sign in and receive a volunteer badge then report to the foyer of the Community Theater. If you have any questions, please contact Janet Huseby jhuseby@pacbell.net From bhs at idiom.com Mon Jan 28 16:04:53 2008 From: bhs at idiom.com (bhs@idiom.com) Date: Mon Jan 28 16:45:56 2008 Subject: [BHS etree] JAZZ: Ensemble scores high at Folsom Message-ID: Do not reply to etree, contact Fredda Damast The BHS Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Charles Hamilton attended the Folsom Jazz Festival on Saturday, January 26th. This is a 2 day festival with many, many bands competing. It was a long and very exciting 13 hour day for all of our musicians. The Ensemble made it to the finals and got a rousing standing ovation - no other bands received this. Our 2 combos also did exceptionally well. The quartet including Chase Jackson, Dave McFarland, Nick Murphy and Akeem Hawkins came in 1st in their division. The sextet including Samora Pinderhughes, Forrest Mitchell, Nathan Kersey-Wilson, Ryan Thomas, Mike Stock-Matthews and Nick Murphy came in 3rd in their division. All combo members received a "soloist award". They were amazing! Congratulations to these talented musicians in the Jazz ensemble - your community is proud of you. Students who score 550 or higher on the SAT critical reading section or 24 or higher on the ACT English are excused from the English placement test. All colleges require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). I strongly recommend that you apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . This is the only official site for filling out the FAFSA. Beware of other sites that charge money to fill out the FAFSA. In order to file electronically, you will need two PIN numbers ? one for one parent and one for the student. These are your electronic signatures. You can apply for the PIN numbers at www.pin.ed.gov If you haven?t done so already, I recommend that you do so now. You can start the FAFSA while you are waiting to receive your PIN numbers. FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS ? We will be holding workshops on filling out the FAFSA both before and after school in the Berkeley High library. The next two workshops are: Thurs., February 7,?7:30 am?? Wed., February 13, 3:30 pm Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have enough computers for everyone. Prior to the workshop, pick up the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary information. For a complete list of workshops, go to http://bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=workshops . CHECK FOR FINANCIAL AID DEADLINES AND REQUIRED FORMS FOR EACH SCHOOL ? Although all colleges require the FAFSA, some schools require additional forms. Financial aid deadlines vary from school to school. Some schools have January or early February deadlines. The deadline to file the FAFSA for all UC?s, Cal States and community colleges is March 2, although I recommend that you file sooner if at all possible. The financial deadline for each college can be found on its website or by calling the financial aid office. Make a list of each school?s financial aid deadline (some are as early as January 15) and the forms they require. We have a form available in the College/Career Center to help you keep track of this information. If you don?t file by the deadline, you are likely to get less financial aid. The most important thing is meeting the deadline, not having the exactly correct information. You can always go back and update your information once you complete your tax forms. CAL GRANTS ? Cal Grants are free money from the state of California based on the student?s GPA and family income. The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or private. We feel doing three years in advance is in everyone's interest, especially our students' families. We are in active discussion with the teachers' union. The changes on the calendar include two major shifts: we are considering closing school Thanksgiving week and the week around the President day holidays in February. We have found that students and staff are less likely to be present during these holiday periods causing both a loss of instruction for these students and a loss of revenue for the District. The number student days during the year remains the same and summer breaks will be nine weeks long. We will release the calendar as soon as it is available. ========================================== Mark A. City Year is a non-profit Americorps program. Students serve as mentors and tutors in San Jose elementary schools as well as run after school programs on campus. Because it is full time, corps members receive a weekly stipend of $230, health insurance, child care, public transportation passes, and en educational scholarship of $4,725 that they can use for college. Students ages 17-24 who would like to work with kids, give back to their communities and earn money for college can apply. Information is also available at www.cityyear.org . If you are considering attending a Cal State campus, you must sign up to take placement tests ? ELM for math and EPT for English. However, students who score 550 or higher on the SAT math or 23 or higher on the ACT math are excused from the math test. Students who score 550 or higher on the SAT critical reading section or 24 or higher on the ACT English are excused from the English placement test. You must have the results from the placement tests before you can register for classes, so take the earliest possible test. You can take the test at any Cal State campus and the results will be sent to all CSU campuses. To sign up at Cal State East Bay, go to www.testing.csuhayward.edu/eptelm/eptelmhome.php . To sign up at San Francisco State, go to www.sfsu.edu/~testing/ee.html . If you do not have a SF State ID number, enter your social security number. The fee for each test is $18, which can be paid on the day of the test. CAL STATE DEADLINES - February 1 is the last day to file applications for admission to the following Cal State campuses: Channel Islands, Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors), Fresno, Fullerton (open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing) and Stanislaus. March 1 is the application for these campuses: Dominguez Hills, East Bay, San Bernardino, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, Sacramento State, and Monterey Bay. After March 1, due to budget cuts, you will not be able to apply for admission to any Cal State campus for the fall 2008 term. If you and need help with your application, please see me or Ms. Price as soon as possible. FINANCIAL AID ? Now is the time to work on your application for financial aid. Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy ? just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2 listing a California college to receive the information and fill out the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221. This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Deadline to turn in the form is January 30. SAT/ACT TEST DATES ? February 7 is the late registration deadline for the March 1 SAT tests. March 7 is the regular registration deadline for the April 12 ACT test. Subject tests are not offered on this test date. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221. *CAL GRANTS ? Cal Grants are free money from the state of California based on the student?s GPA and family income. The money may be used at any accredited California college, public or private. Applying for the Cal Grant is very easy ? just fill out and submit the FAFSA by March 2 listing a California college to receive the information and fill out the Cal Grant Information Release Form, available in D173 and D221. Ellen Singer-Vine writes: My father, Herbert Singer, was the first school psychologist in the Berkeley schools and from 1962 to 1982 he was school psychologist at BHS. (After his retirement, he continued his connection with BHS as a volunteer in the front office.) His children and three of his grandchildren also attended BHS. My father was passionate about vocational education and he lamented its absence in recent years at the High School. When he died in the Spring 2007, our family created a fund (administered by the Berkeley High Development Group) to support students who do not choose the college bound track. Ilene Abrams, Angela Price, Dave Stevens, Flora Russ and I have spent the past months brainstorming about a program at BHS that would address my father's interest in vocational education and we have come up with a program called The Herb Singer Green Scholars. Through this program we will help prepare 5-6 students each year for a mentoring/apprenticeship program in the green industries. We are seeking the participation of parents whose work is in the green industries i.e. solar, plumbing, landscaping, irrigation, carpentry etc and would be interested in being a mentor. Please contact Ellen Singer-Vine for information at coldsprings5@yahoo.com if you are interested in helping. Mr. Robinson is back, and insists that he provides tutors for the Berkeley schools, and even invokes the good name of the Berkeley School Volunteers. This is absolutely not true. We currently have a letter on file advising him that he is not allowed on any BUSD school site or administration building because his aggressive behavior frightened some of our staff. He claims to be providing services in other Districts, but that is not our concern. Our only concern is that he has been fraudulently using the name of the BUSD in his fundraising efforts. We have notified the Berkeley Police in the past, and the message below comes from them. My notice from 2006 (below) gives other options for donations to help at Berkeley High School. To donate to the Berkeley Public Education Foundation's Berkeley School Volunteers, go to: www.bpef-online.org. Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer ======================================================= To all, Please be aware of an individual that's been going around the city asking for donations, re: Berkeley High School. Remember Berkeley High School does not go door to door requesting donations. Read the below paragraph on 'Fundraising scam for Berkeley High School'. Also attached is a copy of the B.A.S.I.C letter this individual is displaying to try and get you to donate. John Nutterfield #15 Area 1 Coordinator Berkeley Police Department jnutterfield@ci.berkeley. ca.us (510) 981-5806 My original notice from 2006: November 2006 False Fundraising Alert About this time every year people seem to hear from an individual by the name of Marcus Robinson who claims that he is fundraising for a tutoring program called BASIC, and is serving the Berkeley schools. This is not true, in fact Jim Slemp has made it clear that he is not permitted on the Berkeley High School campus. He has been known to actually set up meetings in the front corridors of the administration building, to re info rce the image that he is connected to BHS. I met him about three years ago, and he looked like he was just stepping out of a meeting with one of the vice principals. He has been doing this for years and is very convincing. Mr. Robinson will probably show you a letter signed by school board director John Selawsky. The letter is real, but was written for one specific project that John believed to be true at the time, before we began to hear stories of questionable fundraising attempts going back 20 years. Please report any attempts by this man to the Berkeley Police Department Fraud Division 981-5900. Ask for copies of any material he shows you. If you are interested in making a donation to support the work going on at Berkeley High School or any of the other school sites, there are funding mechanisms available through the PTA's, and at Berkeley High, the Berkeley High School Development Group is a great way to support the parent efforts at BHS: www.bhsdg.org Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer ========================================== Mark A. Angela Price and I will provide an overview of all aspects of the college admissions process. This meeting is for adults only since the students will be receiving this information in their English classes. Come with all of your questions! Ms. Price and I will be speaking to the junior English classes at the beginning of February. Following the presentations, juniors will be able to sign up for individual appointments with their College Advisor. FOR SENIORS MONDAY - FEBRUARY 4, 2:20 PM, College/Career Center - Want to take some time off before you go to college? Come to hear information on City Year in San Jose. *CAL STATE DEADLINES ? TODAY - February 1 is the last day to file applications for admission to the following Cal State campuses: Channel Islands, Chico (except nursing and recording arts majors which are already closed), Fresno, Fullerton (open to engineering and computer science majors only), San Jose, San Marcos (if space is available), Sonoma (except for interdisciplinary studies, human development, liberal studies and nursing which are already closed) and Stanislaus. The next two workshops are: Thurs., February 7, 7:30 am Wed., February 13, 3:30 pm Please sign up in advance in the College/Career Center so that we have enough computers for everyone. Prior to the workshop, pick up the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet so that you can prepare the necessary information. For a complete list of workshops, go to http:// bhs.berkeley.net/index.php?page=workshops . This is a very simple form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 12. SAT/ACT TEST DATES ? February 7 is the late registration deadline for the March 1 SAT tests. March 7 is the regular registration deadline for the April 12 ACT test. Subject tests are not offered on this test date. Fee waivers for low income students are available in D221.
