To contribute, make check payable to BHS Development Group and write "CPA Ivoryana Scholarship Fund" on the memo line. --Community Partnerships Academy families and staff Ivoryana Valentin (1989-2008) Alex Aguiar, her classmate from CP Academy 2007 said, she's like a Valkyrie. It's true. A Valkyrie is a figure from Norse mythology, a powerful female goddess on a winged horse who carried slain warriors to Valhalla. The shimmering metal on her shield is said to account for the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Like the Northern Lights, Ivoryana was rare, mysterious, powerful. So beautiful as to shock those who saw her for the first time. She was an old soul, one of the few fourteen-year-olds able to laugh at herself when I first met her as a ninth grader. She was too young to die, but she was one of those people who was never going to get old anyway. She saw so much tragedy in her short life, but she always put on a brave face. She was beautiful and smart, at once delicate and powerful, her firm voice trembling only slightly through her tears at those who hid behind their ignorance, making victims of the already weak. As a student, she was consistent, but knew herself enough not to push too hard. I tried to get her to take AP, but she knew that balancing her Children's Hospital internship with her regular school work was going to be challenging already. So she gave a hundred percent. In everything. All the time. And I could see her in the pediatric oncology ward, her wacky sense of humor bringing smiles to the faces of the little kids with sunken eyes, bald from chemo. Momentarily replacing their troubles with bold laughter. Her heart-shaped face and bright almond-eyes looking into theirs. Saying, you can do this, kid. Flora Russ always said, if I were in the hospital, I'd want her standing over me. She was a protector. Yeah. A winged horse. Aurora Borealis. Her goodness brought that kind of light to the world. And her memory will forever fill the skies with flashes of brilliant color. We are looking for volunteers that can come for at least one and maybe two sessions. It promises to be a very interesting and special event. English Teacher Alan Miller who has organized the event needs volunteers to help students to their seats and generally, to maintain order during the event. The storytellers scheduled to appear are: 1. Periods 1,2: (8:30 to 10:30) Karen McKie, an African American and former BHS parent who has served on numerous district and site committees. She uses dolls to tell stories about her youth... 2. Periods 3,4: (10:30 to 11:30 then 12:15 to 1:15) Charlie Chin, a classically trained Chinese storyteller who has done voice over work for many films and commercials... 3. Periods 5,6: (1:20 to 3:15) Ruth Halpern, the sister of BHS teacher Phil Halpern and has done writing workshops and storytelling with the local writer Joel ben Izzy.... Each will tell stories and answer questions about storytelling. This festival is scheduled in conjunction with several sophomore classes reading Chinua Achebe's novel, Things Fall Apart. Mr. Miller can use 4 -5 volunteers each period. If you are interested in helping at this very special event, please email Mr. Miller and copy Janet Huseby with the times you can come. Because this is such great news, we want to be sure none of the BHS community missed it! -----Original Message----- Friday, March 14, 2008 3:20 PM Subject: ADMIN: BIHS earns International Baccalaureate certification As of February 11, Berkeley High School is authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, starting in Fall 2008. We may now refer to our school as an IB World School. (The official notification from the IBO secretary general in Switzerland got lost in the mail, which is why it took so long to get the news out!) Visit the BIHS website to read more from Vice Principal Rory Bled about this momentous achievement and what it means for BIHS students and families. The mailing is being sent first class so it should arrive at your home shortly. Please watch for it. In the envelope you will find the following information: 1. Seniors. 12th grade families will receive a letter from Principal Slemp, the dates of senior activities, graduation information, and a newsletter. 2. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors. All current 9th -11th grade families will receive their students? transcripts, course requests for next year, and the newsletter. In addition there is a letter explaining the school transcript. Parents should take a moment to review their child?s choices for next year carefully and quickly as all changes must be implemented by Wednesday, March 26. If your child wishes to make changes they should come to the library computer lab any day after school where a counselor will be available to help them. Questions answered (before even asked.) 1. Some students will receive two envelopes. If that is the case, USUALLY the handwritten envelope has the most up-to-date information. Check both carefully. 2. If your child receives a transcript and no course selection, USUALLY it means that the course selection has not yet been made. Your child should make selections as soon as possible by going to the Library computer lab after school. If your child has already made his/her course selections and did not receive a course request form, please have them go to the computer lab after school to make sure the information is correct. 3. Your child's requests are not what they asked for. Two possibilities here: a) your child made changes after the requests were printed up OR there was a mistake. It is to catch mistakes (as well as alert parents as to their child?s choices) that we are going to this effort?please have your child come to the computer lab after school to correct the request. Finally, this mailing was very very complicated. Many thanks to the Front Desk volunteers who carefully matched transcripts, course requests, and mailing labels. Also thank you to the Friday PTSA mailing crew under the leadership of Alisa Gould and Lynn Fuller who pulled the whole mailing together. Usually I do not feel that our school is that large--but during a mailing, there is no doubt. It would be impossible to communicate to all our families without the generous support of our community. The effects on every school district in the state, including Berkeley's, will be devastating. California currently ranks 46th in the country in education spending and is $1,900 below the national average in per student funding. The governor is proposing to put us another $800 below the national average. Parents statewide will have to become active immediately if we are going to protect our children's education and prevent these cuts from happening. On Tuesday, March 25th, at 7:30 PM in the Little Theater, the Berkeley High PTSA will be hosting a general meeting to discuss these issues and how we can best move forward. We strongly urge everyone to attend and cannot stress enough the seriousness of what may happen to education in both Berkeley and around the state. We will have multiple guest speakers present (hopefully representing the Berkeley Federation of Teachers, State PTA, and Sacramento organizations and representatives) to help fill everyone in on the latest information and to help lay out what we need to do. As well as defending ourselves against cuts in education (by lobbying legislators to not put aside proposition 98), this is also the time to discuss the possibility of putting an initiative on the November ballot to force the state to either make us 25th in per student funding or to mandate a change in how the state budget gets passed (from a two-thirds majority to a simple majority). There's no better place to start this effort than here in Berkeley, but we cannot do this without a tremendous amount of your participation. We look forward to seeing you there! For those of you who would like to stay in the loop with regard to the on-going negotiations, there are two sources of information you can tap into. For information updates from the BFT, please email bft4tchr@lmi.net and write "Please add me to the email updates" in the subject box. For negotiations information from the Berkeley Unified School District, you can visit http://www.berkeley.k12.ca.us/ or contact the BUSD's public information officer, Mark Coplan, at mark_coplan@berkeley.k12.ca.us. These negotiations are always important for all of us, as well as for the teachers, and it's always good to stay well informed. BFT's Human Billboard: "NO CUTS! INCREASE STATE REVENUE!" The Berkeley Federation of Teachers heard the words "Budget Crisis" and hit the ground running! They have developed a series of letters to legislators and other handouts, and have been at every PTA meeting to share these tools. Sam Frankel, BFT rep to the PTA Council (BAM teacher & BHS parent) created this incredible "Human Billboard", which drew the attention of everyone passing by the District Office last Friday afternoon, and he is bringing it back this Friday from 4:30 to 5:30PM (folks actually gathered closer to 4PM to get ready). They were joined by staff, parents and students, as well as Superintendent Bill Huyett and Board President John Selawsky. The energy was electric, and I encourage folks to come out and stand behind the billboard to give support. This is really a call to all corners of our community, and it is critical that the Governor understands that we will not stand by for the destruction of public education in California. 2. EVERYONE COME OUT FOR THE BFT'S MAJOR RALLY ON APRIL 9TH! BFT RALLY: Protest the Governor's Proposed Budget In Support of Teachers With Layoff Notices Wednesday April 9th, 2008 5PM Central Administration Building 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way Support Your Colleagues, Your Children's Teachers (and the future of public education in California) 3. Senator Don Perata came out stronger then ever on yesterday when he said, "Democrats will never leave Sacramento as long as the governor intends to cut education by even one dime." This Tribune report shares a stand that is critical for him to take right now, and I'm going to send him a simple email headed "Not One Dime From Education... Thanks" to encourage him to continue to stand firm to to protect every last dime for education, and let him know that he will not be standing alone. Senator.Perata@sen.ca.gov I'm receiving reports from schools of the hundreds of letters they are sending the legislators, and it is obviously making a difference. Not One Dime From Education.... Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer =================================================================================================== Perata talks tough on across-the-board cuts Governor's plan challenged as budget battles continue By Lisa Vorderbrueggen, STAFF WRITER Tribune Article Created: 03/18/2008 02:40:04 AM PDT CONCORD ? Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata again threw down a state budget challenge Monday morning. Surrounded by about 50 parents, teachers and Democrats on the front lawn of Glenview Middle School, a modest school in a middle-class Concord neighborhood, Perata continued to pressure Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to withdraw $4.4 billion in proposed education cuts from California's K-12 system. "I'm taking off my (sun)glasses so you can look in my eyes and see if I'm kidding," Perata told the crowd. He was referring to Republican assertions that Democrats are going through the motions in their budget protests. "Democrats will never leave Sacramento as long as the governor intends to cut education by even one dime." Perata is the face of a Democratic statewide public relations drive to drum up outcry overthe governor's proposed 10-percent, across-the-board budget cuts in most state programs, including schools. Democrats say only voters can persuade Republicans in the Legislature to stray from their "no tax hikes" vow and close the $8 billion budget deficit with a mix of cuts and new sources of money. Democrats hold a majority in both legislative houses but they lack the two-thirds majority to approve a budget without Republican support. "Can we afford to pay more taxes?" Perata said. "No. But do we have to pay more? Yes, and we will." Assembly Minority Leader Mike Villines, R-Fresno, said Democrats have been unwilling to consider budget cuts as a way to dig out of the $8 billion deficit. "They're jumping right to taxes," he said. "The only persons tax increases will hurt are the working people who are struggling. It's offensive to say we won't leave Sacramento until we put taxes on peoples' back." At Monday's event, education advocates distributed "Classrooms Come First" cards for people to send to business leaders. California firms are lobbying for access to trained foreign workers, Perata said, while the state fails to educate children to fill those jobs. "What the hell kind of sense does that make?" he asked. Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, D-Concord, and state Sen. Tom Torlakson, D-Antioch, stood with Perata and Natalie Richardson, an eighth-grader circulating an anti-cuts petition, and several teachers who received notices saying they could be laid off. Teacher contracts require notification to instructors who could lose their jobs in the next school year. Statewide, 14,000 teachers received notifications last week, including almost 200 in the Mount Diablo Unified School District. Glenbrook has sent such notices to four full-time teachers and may have to lay off three assistant teachers and a campus supervisor. "I'm so concerned about the future of our students and our teachers and our state," said a tearful Cherie Gan, a first-grade teacher at Ygnacio Valley Elementary School who could be laid off. Both parties clearly view the deficit as an opportunity to leverage reforms, whether it's a restoration of the vehicle license fee that Schwarzenegger axed upon his election or the changing of spending formulas that don't always reflect the state's ec onomic picture. While Perata pounded the podium in Concord, Schwarzenegger talked budget reform in Fresno with Villines and Fresno Mayor Alan Autry. The governor has said the state cannot continue to spend $400 million to $600 million a month more than it takes in and state leaders must reform the automatic spending formulas that outstrip revenues. The state's biggest such formula is Proposition 98, a 1988 voter-approved measure that guarantees a level of education funding except during financial emergencies. But unlike Republican legislative leaders, who say they will steadfastly oppose tax increases, the governor has said that everything is on the table in upcoming negotiations. Most years, legislators respond to the governor's May budget proposal ? an updated draft of the January version ? but Schwarzenegger wants to begin talks now. "The governor wants lawmakers to come to the table and start negotiating now," said Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Sabrina Lockhart. "Delaying the budget will only make our problems worse." Message-ID: Contact: jhuseby@pacbell.net In April Berkeley High is offering a series of exams for students who want to take Honors Math classes next year. Many people have, as requested have sent emails to Math Department chair Mike Weitz in order to sign their child up for the exam. Many are concerned because they have NOT received an email in return. Not to worry. Mr. Weitz does not send a confirmation email. You may assume your child is signed up for the exam. Details on where do go and what to bring for the exam are below in the original email: 1. The Berkeley High School math department will conduct Honors testing for the 08/09 school year in April. The tentative dates for the testing are Mon 4/7, Thurs 4/10, Mon 4/14, Tues 4/15, and Thurs 4/17. Students take an exam to test into either Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra 2 or Honors Math Analysis. 2. The exams will be given at 3:45 pm on the day of the testing in room H306. All exams consist of a 45-problem multiple-choice test to be completed in 45 minutes. Students need to bring a pencil and a scientific (non-graphing) calculator. Students new to the district also need to supply the e-mail address of their current math teachers. 3. Who needs to take the test: a. No test necessary if the student is currently in a BHS Honors class and earning an A or a B. If the student is in a non honors class and wishes to take an honors class the BHS student must take the test. There is a Sign-up sheet outside of H113. You may only take the test on the day you sign up for. Some slots may fill up fast. b. 8th graders attending King, Willard or Longfellow do not take a test if they are in Honors Algebra and earning an A. If they are in a regular Algebra (or Honors earning less than an A) and wish to take Honors Geometry they must take a test. They should sign up by emailing Mr. Weitz (see directions below) c. Current 8th grader entering BHS from out of district (i.e. private school) interested in Honors Geometry must test in. No exemptions. e-mail Mr. Weitz (see directions below) d. current 9th-11th grader entering BHS from out of district interested in Honors Algebra 2 Honors Math Analysis must test in. No exemptions. e-mail Mr. Weitz (see directions below) e. In some rare circumstances, incoming 9th graders that are new to BUSD want to take the course Honors Algebra 2. These students first need to pass the Honors Geometry placement test in the spring; then these students need to pass an Honors Geometry final exam, to be taken in late August. Contact Mr. Weitz about Honors Algebra 2. 4. Directions for e-mail sign ups: To sign up for an honors test, e-mail Mr. Weitz at mweitz@berkeley.k12.ca.us. Type in the subject line of the e-mail the name of the student, the current grade, the type of test desired and the desired date. Mr. Weitz will only be reading the subject line. If he sends you no response you may assume you have the requested date. On the day of the test, be sure to send the student with their current math teacher's e-mail address if they are new to the district. EXAMPLE: Subject: Benjamin Carson, 8th grade, hnrs geo, 4/7 5. Frequently asked questions: What should my child study to prepare for the honors exam? To prepare for the exams, students should practice with SAT II test prep books. Students testing into Honors Geometry should study Algebra 1 material. Students testing into Honors Algebra 2 should study Algebra 1 and Geometry material. Students testing into Honors Math Analysis should study Algebra 2 material and some Geometry material as well, including Right Triangle Trigonometry. My child took the honors exam in April and didn't pass. Some of the topics on the exam weren't covered in his/her current math class until after the test. Is this fair? All students taking the exam in April will have some deficiencies because they haven't completed an entire course yet. Which topics they miss depends on what book they are currently working out of. So, in a sense, all students have a similar handicap. Students who are "close to passing" are invited to retake the exam in August to account for differences in math curricula. How should I know whether my child should take and honors math class? Honors math classes are extremely rigorous with extra emphasis on logic and problem solving skills. Success in an honors class requires a greater time commitment than a regular class. A student should only in honors if they are willing to put in the time and enjoys doing challenging math problems. How much work do students have in honors math? On average, a student can expect at least an hour of math homework a night. It can be more, depending on how fast a student works on math. Also problem sets may be assigned that require extra time outside of regular homework. Honors students must also fulfill a community service requirement. How do honors math classes affect my child's GPA? For the UC and Cal State systems, Honors Geometry and Honors Algebra 2 are not given any special weighting. So, for instance, a B in Honors Algebra 2 counts as a B for calculating GPA. Honors Math Analysis does get special weighting. In calculating GPA, Honors Math Analysis counts as one letter grade higher. So a B in Honors Math Analysis counts as an A in calculating GPA. If my child doesn't take an honors math class, can they take advance placement (AP) classes later on? The only requirement to take AP Calculus is to pass Math Analysis or IMP 4 with a C or better. Non-honors students are definitely prepared to take AP and they routinely score high marks on AP math tests in their senior year.
