It's a major issue and it will be extremely important to have a good turnout. The group that we get on Tuesday will likely be the people that we can most count on in the future for writing more letters, going to Sacramento, getting involved with any potential ballot efforts and communicating with friends around the state for expanding lobbying efforts. The meeting will be held in the Little Theater at 7:30 PM. We absolutely need your involvement! I just quickly wanted to update you as to where we are at for Tuesday. As of now, the likely list of speakers includes: * Cathryn Bruno (head of the Berkeley PTSA Council), * Mark Coplan (from BUSD admin.), * Cathy Campbell (head of the BFT), * Loni Hancock (our representative to the state assembly), * Karen Hemphill (BUSD School Board Member), * and hopefully a representative from either the state PTA or the Peralta District PTA. Conversations are also being held with the California School Board Association (CSBA), the Education Coalition in Sacramento and several other legislators' offices and we will hopefully have some good information to report from them. As well as the speakers, we will also set up tables for parents to sign pre-made letters ready for signing and mailing to all the relevant politicians, and we will discuss the likelihood and logistics of attempting to put an initiative on the November ballot changing the state budget process from a two-thirds vote to a simple majority. It should be a very informative and productive evening. We look forward to seeing you there! Judy Appel, a very committed parent and the Executive Director of Our Family Coalition, has done a wonderful job of facilitating the process, which has already helped the District create our harassment/bullying policy passed by the Board. Judy asked me to pass on this update on what the group is doing. Thanks Judy for making this great group a reality in our community, probably another Berkeley first that many surrounding Districts are already watching to learn. Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer ===================================================================== Hello BUSD Family Diversity parents, teachers, principals and others, I wanted to catch you up on the latest news from the BUSD Family Diversity group AND ASK FOR YOUR HELP. You may remember that we conducted a small survey of all of you to get a sense of where we should focus our work. Thanks to those who responded -- I have pasted the results below. In summary, there is a pretty good majority of folks who think we should focus on 1 staff development & curriculum, 2) visibility to incoming parents and 3) work in the middle schools. This is great input, and both supports work we have been doing and offers opportunity for some new energy. I met with John Selawsky (school board president) and Bill Huyett (the new Superintendent) yesterday, and I am very hopeful about the possibility of our doing some district wide training and curriculum work next year. I would like to get together in person so I can share the outcome of the meeting, and discuss how to split up to work in the three areas we have discussed. I need your help figuring out when and where to meet. We held a meeting in February, but attendance was low. Now I know you think it is valuable that we meet since every last person who responded to the survey requested that the Task Force continue to meet. Can you please let me know which of the following days of the week/month work for you and where you would like to meet. If you just can't make meetings but want to be involved, let me know. If you just are overextended and can't work on this at all, please let me know that, too. When? Tuesdays 1st, 2d, 3rd, 4th Wednesdays 2nd & 4th Thursdays 1st, 2d, 3rd, 4th What do you think about meeting at the District Annex at 1835 Allston Street? Message-ID: <20080328161950.303712D600D@idiom.com> PLEASE DO NOT REPLY to the etree, contact Janet Huseby [mailto:jhuseby@pacbell.net] It is not uncommon for the senior class to pick a day in the spring and spread the word that it is "skip day." Usually the school follows the normal attendance procedures on this day. Unfortunately, most unfortunately, the word is out this year that the skip day is going to take place on April 08. April 8 is the day Berkeley High will be visited by representatives of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) the group that grants our school its accreditation. It is important that ALL our wonderful students be in class that day. Last time Berkeley High was visited by the WASC team we were granted a rare and much coveted six year accreditation. Before that the school had received a series of dismal two year ratings. The April 8 visit is our mid term report. Administrators and faculty have been working for over a year preparing for this visit. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT. Parents, please encourage your seniors to be in "their places with bright shiny places" ON APRIL 8 and perhaps seek out another day to play. The plan is to start the rally at 11:15am and it will be followed by visits to legislators. Local PTAs throughout California are being encouraged to partner with educators, administrators, school board officials, business leaders, union leaders and other concerned community members to organize buses to take groups to Sacramento. Anyone you can encourage to join you would be great. The District will order the buses for us, but we need to know how many are needed by next Friday, April 4th. Please respond to BHS PTSA President, Mark van Krieken ASAP at markvk4@comcast.net Our educational funding, statewide as well as in Berkeley, will drop from approximately $7,000 to about $6,200 if these cuts go through. Everything we have heard from all the officials we've spoken with, both here in Berkeley and in Sacramento, is that these cuts will happen if we don't become very active in protesting them. Everybody needs to feel outraged. Please get involved with the steps that the District and the PTA put forth, or your children's education will be compromised. Thank you for your support and have a great Spring Break. Message-ID: <20080328202053.145D92D6711@idiom.com> Dear Berkeley High Parents, We very much need every one of you to please write to the following four politicians to strongly object to the Governor's proposed $4.8 billion cut to education. Attached you will find four letters: one to each Governor Schwarzenegger, Assemblywoman Hancock, Assemblyman Swanson and Senator Perata for everyone to download sign and mail, email or fax (please be sure to type your name, address, phone number and date in at the top and to type your name underneath you signature at the bottom). This battle against the proposed cuts to education is only going to be won with a tremendous political effort and we will need to contact these representatives on a regular basis. The State PTA recommends that we contact these four once a week by either mail, email, fax or phone. Mark a day of the week on your calendars to quickly contact these representatives with a quick word to remind them that this issue still really matters to you. Feel free to keep using the same letters over and over. The Governor in particular needs to hear from everyone, every week. As I also mentioned in my other email message today, our educational funding, statewide as well as in Berkeley, will drop from approximately $7,000 to about $6,200 if these cuts go through. Everything we have heard from all the officials we've spoken with, both here in Berkeley and in Sacramento, is that these cuts will happen if we don't become very active in protesting them.
