Join in arts, humanities, drama, dance, music, and science activities. Learn about one of California's first fully "green" community college campuses and how to get the money you need to finance a college education. It's free, open to the public and located at 2050 Center St., half a block west of the downtown Berkeley BART station. "We want everyone to visit and enjoy an afternoon of getting to know us," said BCC President Betty Inclan. "Meet our faculty, our students, and participate in tours, workshops, music, and choose anything you like to do." Interested in animation? Attend hands-on digital art workshops, or a demonstration by a Pixar animator and story developer (3PM). How about trying your hand at a science experiment? Sign up for a session in the college's chemistry or physics lab. Problems at work got you down? Be part of a workshop on job survival skills. Or, for movie buffs, how about an afternoon of film criticism? Activities run the gamut of the arts, sciences, and humanities. Take a tour of Berkeley City College, one of California's first green community college campuses; listen to music by Mekesmo or Herbie Mims' jazz band; take a workshop on how to fund a college education; and there are hands-on sessions on creating a one-stop college web page. Located half a block from BART and AC Transit connections, and one-and-one-half blocks from U.C., Berkeley City College opened its doors in August 2006. The two-year old facility hosts programs and classes in art and multimedia arts, business and information technology, liberal arts and the sciences, languages and distance education, to name a few. Berkeley City College is part of the Peralta Community College District which serves the communities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont. The district also includes College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College. In addition to providing two-year programs that prepare students for long-term educational goals, Peralta also offers specialized life-long learning opportunities to Bay Area residents. Message-ID: Do not reply to etree, contact Mark van Krieken mailto:markvk4@comcast.net Berkeley High has more than 5,000 parents and guardians, but only 5 BHS parents have volunteered to go to Sacramento on April 24th to protest the Governor's proposed $4.8 billion in cuts to education. We realize what a huge inconvenience it can be for both parents with jobs and without jobs to make time for this sort of event, but we need more people to come. As we have mentioned before, everything we have heard from all the officials we've spoken with, both here in Berkeley and in Sacramento, indicate that these cuts will happen if we don't become very active in protesting them. It'll be fun! It'll be exciting! AND-- it will be productive! Please get involved with the steps that the District and the PTA put forth to try and ensure that our children's education doesn't get compromised. We very much need your support and involvement. The California State PTA rally is on Thursday, April 24th in Sacramento. The day has been set up so that parents can drop their children off for school, catch one of the buses by 9:30, be there for the start of the rally at 11:15, followed by visits to legislators, and be back in Berkeley in time for everyone to pick up their kids (you may still want to have a backup plan ? just in case). The District will order the buses for us (the ordering date has been pushed back a week), but we need to know how many are needed by this Friday morning. If you think you may be able to join us, please respond to BHS PTSA President, Mark van Krieken ASAP at markvk4@comcast.net. More details of the day will be posted as they become available. The Advanced Placement (AP) Exams will begin Monday, May 5. Last year Berkeley High administered over 1,800 exams over a two week period. We are committed to offering as many AP courses (and tests) as possible. However, we can only do so with community support. Each test will have one paid administrator. For exams with more than 35 students, the college board requires an additional proctor, for 51 to 100 students three proctors are called for, and so on. In addition, a number of students have been granted extended time. Proctors are needed to sit with these students as they complete their tests. If you have a child taking an AP exam, please do your best to proctor another exam. And, if you have a child with extended time, please consider proctoring another child's extended time. Together, we can make these tests work. I will distribute parking passes for volunteers who need them. 2. The test begins at 8 a.m. for morning sessions and noon for afternoon sessions. We are asking volunteers to report at 7:30 a.m. for the morning and 11:30 for the afternoon sessions. I will let you know where the exam will take place next week. 3. Below you will find the AP schedule and the proctoring needs for that particular exam. Parents are not allowed to proctor their own child's exam. Please let me know at jhuseby@pacbell.net which AP exam you can proctor and if you will need a parking pass for that day. If you need a parking pass, I will need your address in order to mail it to you. 3. Below is a truncated test schedule showing our proctoring needs. ANNUAL OPEN MIC READING At Berkeley Arts Magnet/Whittier's Allen Ginsberg Poetry Garden 1645 Milvia Street (between Lincoln and Virginia Streets) in Berkeley Saturday, April 26 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Background: A little more than 50 years ago, Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg penned portions of his controversial, but celebrated, poem "Howl!" while living in a rose-covered cottage at 1624 Milvia Street--opposite what is now the Berkeley Arts Magnet/Whittier School and site of a poetry garden dedicated to Ginsberg two years after his death in 1997. The garden is the venue for an annual Open Mic poetry reading, held the last Saturday of national Poetry Month. This year's event, on April 26 (2-4 pm), marks the bicentennial of the birth of American Poet, Abolitionist and Quaker John Greenleaf Whittier, the school's namesake. In 2000, the Berkeley Landmarks Preservation Commission acknowledged the Garden and neighborhood's connection with the Beats--including Jack Kerouac, whose "On the Road" is now 50 years old--as part of its Historical Plaque Project (more at: http://www.dailycal.org/printable.php?id=2382) Come one, come all, rain or shine! The readings (authored by you or someone else) are done continuously from 2 pm on--with the spotlight on youths. Help needed. Next week, starting Monday, April 14 we will begin the massive job of sorting thousands of STAR tests. Each individual 9th -11th grade student has a file sorted by their second period class. Into this file the appropriate math, English, history and science test must be placed. We need lots of help in order to accomplish this task. The sorting will take place Monday 8:30 to 3 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 to noon in the Old Gym's Old Dance Studio (Please come in the Girls' entrance off of Milvia, go up stairs, and head for the old Dance Studio--cannot be missed as it is the southernmost room in the building.) If you can help for one or two hours or more at any point over these coming five days you will be warmly welcomed and appreciated. In fact, you are urgently needed. 2. Explanation. All 9th - 11th graders take the test which will be given Tuesday-Friday, April 22-25. Students will report at 8:30 to their 2nd period classroom. The test will be administered in the morning. After lunch there will be regular classes. Seniors have the mornings off and will report to regular class after lunch. The STAR test is mandated under the No Child Left Behind. The information garnered from the test is used not only internally at Berkeley High to assess each student's progress but to assess our curriculum and teaching. In addition, the numbers generated are used to create the API which is a useful and much used method of comparing and rating California high schools. We have not been able to generate an API for the last three years because we have had fewer than 95 percent of our students take the exam. Our goal is to have 95 percent of our students take the exam. Please help. 3. More help needed. During the testing days, Vice Principal Maggie Heredia-Peltz is hoping to have three or four parents in the early morning (from 8 to 9) from Tuesday to Friday to help pass out the tests, deliver extra test sheets, etc. If you can help, please let me know at jhuseby@pacbell.net 4. And a thank you to the Berkeley High Development Group for making it possible. Students and volunteers heard Karen McKie tell stories about her Philadelphia childhood in an all Black neighborhood where neighbors took their "village" responsibilities seriously, especially Miss Margaret the busybody next door. They also heard Mckie share her insights about dollmaking. They heard Charlie Chin tell a series of interconnected stories and punctuate his tales with a large folding fan that served alternately as a bird's wings, or chopsticks, or a divider between scenes. They quickly grew to love the many sounds--yes, sounds, not words--that expressed his various characters pleasures, moods and commentary on life. Finally, they heard Ruth Halpern' s gothic tales about a world where characters were as likely to find magic as they were to find companionship. Very Harry Potter! Some 1500 students attended the event throughout the day... from English classes, to Mandarin classes, to History classes, to Special Education sheltered classes, to Reading classes.... Thanks to the many volunteers who made it possible. And thanks to the BHS Development Group for funding the project.
