If you can possible help, please email Peter and copy Janet. We also need help in the afternoon but not as urgently. Thank you! Details are below.... This year, Berkeley High is once again participating in the American Mathematics Competition. About 50 of our students took the initial test. Six (6) qualified for the second round of tests, the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. One student then qualified for the third round, the United States American Math Olympiad, which is limited to 500 students from the entire nation. It is a big deal! Ultimately a team from the US is selected to compete in the International Math Olympiad, which we believe will be held in Spain this summer. We at Berkeley High are very excited about the success of all of our students. Our contestant for the third round will take the Math Olympiad test in Conference Room A at Berkeley High on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 29 and 30 from 9 to 2:30. Math teacher Mr. Bloomsburgh will start the exam and return to wrap it up each day--but he needs someone(s) who can stay with the student as a proctor from 9:30 to 2:30 (or maybe two shifts 9:30 to noon and noon to 2:30. Parking passes are available. This has been a ritual ever since that first edition when the Planet returned on April 1st, 2003, the 125th anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Berkeley. The Berkeley Daily Planet recently announced that they will eliminate the Tuesday edition and produce one larger paper on Friday. The good news is that they have been beefing up their web edition of the newspaper, and are now producing a Berkeley Daily Planet Monday through Friday. http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/ For a good overview of Berkeley in the news, the City of Berkeley's web site provides a valuable news service called Berkeley News Scan. This service regularly searches local and national media sources for news stories related to the City of Berkeley. When you subscribe, you receive a daily update in your email, which is an easy to follow Berkeley news. Those who don't want to subscribe can simply go to the website to see it every day. This is really handy when families are away over the breaks, but want to know what's happening. http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/news/newsscan.asp ========================================== Mark A. PARKING PASSES: Please park in the lot between the softball field and the football field (entrance on Milvia Street). You will notice that next to the softball fence there are a number of Handicapped Parking spots. On most of them, in smaller letters, you will notice that the handicapped parking is not enforced until after 4 p.m. when the warm pool is open to the public. The sign also says, "Staff permit required." As you have a permit, and will leave before 4, please park there. If you are coming for an afternoon slot (11 or 11:30 a.m.), park anywhere you find space. Please display the pass prominently. Non tagged cars are towed. If you requested a pass and have not received one by Monday, please let me know. 2. Most of the exams take place in the Jacket Gym (newest gym). I will have volunteer badges and a sign in sheet at the front table in the Gym. 3. Bring a sweater. The room can be chilly. A number of tests have extended time students. They go to a conference room for the exam. If you end up in a conference room proctoring these students, you will want something to read. Everyone should bring something to read just in case. 4.
