Students will receive training after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are taught by a UC Berkeley law student, and will receive 5 units of elective credit per semester for their participation. The actual training takes about ten weeks, after which class time will be dedicated to case work and enrichment presentations. The Student Court is a great way to build better public speaking skills, beef up college applications, and become active in the community. It allows students who would otherwise be suspended the chance to take responsibility for their actions while allowing them to keep up with their studies. It also allows those who have an affinity for debate a chance to work on the behalf of their community and their peers. Advocates will be assigned real discipline cases and will be able to work on behalf of the student offender and the community. Program duties include interviewing offenders and witnesses, drafting statements, presenting at trials, and conducting outreach presentations. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a three day California Association of Youth Courts Summit in the summer. Anybody interested in a career in law, social work, or teaching should apply. Interested students should go to H104 and ask for Mr. Luu or email david_luu@berkeley.k12.ca.us From bhs at idiom.com Wed May 7 11:22:35 2008 From: bhs at idiom.com (bhs@idiom.com) Date: Wed May 7 11:25:38 2008 Subject: [BHS etree] ADMIN: Morning lockdown, situation resolved Message-ID: <871258.18091.qm@web81404.mail.mud.yahoo.com> contact: jhuseby@pacbell.net This morning before school several of our students were threatened by a boy who claimed to have a gun.
