There is nothing that we can do to relieve the loss that Zachary's family has suffered, but LeConte principal Cheryl Wilson has asked me to pass on the request below for financial support for the difficult arrangements they will have to make in the days ahead. The District cannot ask you to make a donation to a private fund, we can only make the information available so that you can make that decision yourself. The link below will also provide updates on any services, and information about Zachary. Mark Coplan, BUSD Public Information Officer ----- Original Message ----- Cheryl Wilson, Principal LeConte Elementary Mark, could you please make the website information--request for donations for Zachary Cruz's funeral---public. Message on Zachary's Website: In lieu of flowers, please donate to help defray funeral costs. The support the community has shown us has been greatly appreciated. Information about local memorial services will be posted here as soon as we know what they are. We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to the community for placing many flowers, candles, toys and tributes to Zachary at the intersection of Derby and Warring. Also, he loved the Beatles - his favorite Beatles song was, "All you need is love" Link to Zachary Cruz Website: http://www.zacharymichaelcruz.com From bhs at idiom.com Mon Mar 2 12:20:00 2009 From: bhs at idiom.com (bhs@idiom.com) Date: Mon Mar 2 12:20:36 2009 Subject: [BHS etree] EVENT: BHS Jazz Alum Concert - Mar. 15, 3pm Message-ID: <683950.70529.qm@web82108.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Please do not hit reply, contact berkeleyjazz@comcast.net In just two weeks, some of the best jazz musicians in America are staging a benefit concert to help OUR students. If our young musicians haven't brought you the news, here is the story: On Sunday, March 15, the BEST JAZZ CONCERT on the West Coast will take place in Berkeley ! Top jazz recording artists ? all Berkeley HS graduates ? are flying to the Bay Area from across the United States. They are doing this as a tribute to retiring director Charles Hamilton (musical director of BHS Jazz for the past 27 years) and to support the BHS Jazz Program, which needs extra support in these tough times. This historic reunion will also celebrate the amazing legacy of the BHS Jazz program. Alums spanning the past 30+ years will attend and perform at this unique concert. Peter Apfelbaum is coming from N.Y. to be the musical director and is bringing together alums from near and far: Rodney Franklin, Steven Bernstein, Jessica Jones, Dave Ellis, Josh Jones, Dayna Stevens, Hitomi Oba, Kito Gamble and dozens more alums from BHS will be performing. The BHS Jazz program has thrived since 1966 due to the support that Jazz has received by the Berkeley community throughout the years. The experience many students had at BHS has sparked careers and passions in so many musicians. This will be a one of a kind afternoon concert!!! Greg Bridges, local jazz radio personality will be master of ceremonies. There will be many tributes given and amazing performances by so many talented musicians who studied at Berkeley High. The District is confronted with budgetary problems that reduce its ability to provide services at the same level, and in the same manner as provided in previous years. As a consequence, the Board has the authority to reduce or discontinue particular kinds of services. "Particular Kinds of Services" are those services that are scheduled to be eliminated which are currently being provided by District certificated employees. The resolution presented approved by the Board is necessary in order to give the Board flexibility to deal with the budget crisis as it unfolds in the coming months. The resolution affects 120.37 FTE (Full Time Equivalency). 2.2-A Resolution No. 09-38 - Criteria for Determining the Order of Seniority The Board approved Resolution 09-38. The resolution establishes the seniority criteria for employees with the same first day of paid probationary service. This is a critical part of the necessary reduction of services. The list of employees affected will come back to the Board for action on March 11, in order to meet the requirement to notify certificated employees by March 15th, 2009 that they may not have a job with the District next school year. Final notification occurs in May. Notification of classified employees is required 45 days prior to the last day of work, so any positions affected by the budget cuts will come before the Board in April. Informational Item 3.1-I California Healthy Kids Survey Report The Board received a report on the California Healthy Kids Survey which is given to 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th grade students every two years. If by Thursday, March 12 you have not received your child's requests and your child DID fill in a schedule request form either on the computer or on paper, please contact your child's counselor if your child attends King, Longfellow or Willard OR Vice Principal Uri Skowronski (uri_skowronski@berkeley.k12.ca.us) if your child is coming from a non district school and let them know that you did not receive a printout. 2. Please check your child's request form carefully. If your child attends King, Longfellow or Willard the form should be signed and returned to his or her science teacher. If your child is coming from a non district school the form should be signed and returned to Belinda McDaniel at 1830 Allston Way (Berkeley High). If there is a mistake you may cross out the incorrect information and write in the correct information. The final deadline for the submissions is March 16th. 3. We plan to input all incoming students who signed up in time for the first round lottery by the end of this month. We hope to run the lottery by the end of April and notify students as soon as possible thereafter. 4. The lottery will determine program placement. It will not determine individual class selections (language, math, elective, etc.). Actual schedules will be handed out during orientation which will take place on one day during the week of August 24-28. At this point we have not decided which day will be the Freshmen orientation but it will be one of those five days. As soon as that day is set we will post on the etree. During orientation incoming students will be introduced to staff, go on guided school tours, have their picture taken, receive their schedule, books, student organizer, turn in forms, etc. The first day of school will be Wednesday, September 2. There have been many educational cuts that have impacted our program. For the last two years, our program has been cut $25,000.00 each year. In January of this year our program director presented at the commission hearing for the city of Berkeley. The purpose of this hearing is so the commission of Berkeley determines how much money our program will be given for the next two years. We are hopeful our program will not be cut, however, the difficult situation the state and the rest of the county is facing will have an impact on the funds available to the programs in Berkeley. It is our goal to keep the RISE program running the way it does now.? The cuts so far have made us change some of the characteristics of the program, but we do not want to sacrifice anymore. We are taking a pro-active role in keeping our program running strong. Similar to the fundraising event we held last year, our program will once again host a "crab feed." To help our program we ask that you join us for this fundraising event. The tickets are $35.00 for adults and $25.00 for children 12 yrs and under.
