He has been living in Berkeley with his Norwegian family since July, during his father's visit at UC Berkeley. While the rest of the family returns to Norway after one year, he likes it so much here that he wants to stay at BHS to graduate. He is very well integrated, has good friends in Berkeley, and is a serious student, who is doing very well academically. He has lots of interests, plays the guitar, jogs and enjoys swimming and work outs. He has excellent recommendations from teachers at his previous High School in Norway as well as BHS. He is a likeable, polite and easy going boy, as parents of his friends in Berkeley will confirm. He is going home to Norway for the summer, and will be returning to Berkeley when school starts in August. If you are interested in more information, call his mother Birgit at 510-647-8313 or his father Christian at 510-302-7306, or e-mail bskalde@gmail.com. Next week, starting on Tuesday the STAR test will be administered to all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students in the morning. The set up for the test is complicated. Each student needs a folder with the proper tests included. Carol Olson, with the help of two hero volunteers, has been slowly putting the folders together. The job must be finished on Thursday. If you have an hour or two between 8:30 and 3:15, please come help. The action is taking place in the Old Gym. Use the Girls entrance on Milvia where Durant comes in. Walk upstairs and head for the southernmost room. We need you! Next week, Tuesday through Friday (and especially Tuesday) from 8:30 to 9:30 we will need volunteers to act as "runners" delivering missing tests, pencils, etc. Please let me know if you can help. But we can't do it without you! Two FUN events require a number of volunteers (and golfers, if you choose): Friday, May 1, BAF's Annual Golf Tournament takes place at Tilden Golf Course. Helping out at this event is more fun than work, because everyone is happy (maybe not with their golf game) but because they are out in the fresh air in beautiful Tilden Park on a Friday. See below for volunteer time slots. Saturday, May 2 is the 3rd Annual Hall of Fame Event where former BHS student athletes, coaches, and even athletic directors will be honored by being inducted into the Berkeley Athletic Fund Hall of Fame. The luncheon and ceremony takes place in Donahue Gym from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Volunteers will be needed, contact Manish to offer assistance or donations. More details about participating in both events are at http://www.berkeleyathleticfund.org/ You can also show your support by bidding on our BAF auction or donating items for the Auction: http://www.bafonlineauction.cmarket.com/ HOWEVER, right now, please consider volunteering during one of the following times on Friday, May 1 at Tilden: Berkeley High School Golf Classic May 1st, 2009 Tilden Park Golf Course in Berkeley Volunteer Time Slots 1:00 to 3:00 pm Two volunteers to help on Prize/Game holes (these volunteers will oversee prize/game holes - you don't need to know anything about golf - just observe, measure and tally prizes) 3:00 to 6:00 pm Seven volunteers to help on Prize/Game holes (see above) 5:00 to 6:30 pm Help set up picnic buffet dinner food (at least 4 volunteers needed) Other help needed: Volunteers to make and bring salads: at least 6 needed to feed 50 people. You don't need to stay, just come and bring your salad. Sandwiches are being purchased for the golfers, but we need to add all kinds of salads to make it hearty and festive! Students will report at 8:30 to their 2nd period classroom. The test will be administered in the morning. After lunch there will be regular classes. Seniors have the mornings off and will report to regular class after lunch which will end at a different time every day (see schedule below). The STAR test is mandated under the No Child Left Behind. The information garnered from the test is used not only internally at Berkeley High to assess each student's progress but to assess our curriculum and teaching. In addition, the numbers generated are used to create the API which is a useful and much used method of comparing and rating California high schools. We have not been able to generate an API for the last four years because we have had fewer than 95 percent of our students take the exam. We have not yet lost federal funding as a result of our poor showing but the school's reputation has been brought down. Please feed your student a good breakfast and urge him or her to do their best! BAF Athletic Hall of Fame - Saturday, May 2: For over 25 years BAF has been raising funds for athletics at Berkeley High School. In 2007, BAF sponsored the first annual BHS Athletic Hall of Fame, honoring BHS alumni. Please join us for the fun, and it doesn't stop there. BAF Annual Golf Tournament - Friday, May 1: BAF's 2nd Annual Golf Tournament takes place this day, preceding the Hall of Fame ceremonies on Saturday. It is fast becoming BAF's most successful fundraising event. Traditionally, the money collected has been used to pay for uniforms and equipments for BHS teams. In 2004, however, the athletic budget was cut, leaving all freshman teams, some assistant coach stipends and some transportation without funding. BAF stepped up and has continued to keep funding for freshmen sports, stipends and transportation by contributing $20,000 a year to BHS keeping programs and essentials like transportation in tact. The picture is grim as we expect that all of the transportation budget will be cut for next year, potentially over $80,000. Your support is needed now more than ever. Please consider a donation, payable to: Berkeley Athletic Fund, or BAF, and mail it to P.O. Box 11525, Berkeley, CA 94712. Thank you, and GO JACKETS!!!
