Below are answers. If you have more questions, let us know. 1. Graduation takes place Friday, June 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the UC Berkeley Greek Theater. Students must report in the morning for rehearsal at 9:00 a.m. and then they report in the afternoon at 4 pm for the event. In addition, there is a mandatory rehearsal/meeting at the Berkeley Community Theater (BHS campus) on Thursday, June 11. Traditionally this first rehearsal has taken place at 2 p.m. However, students should listen carefully to the Student Dally Bulletin for the exact time. Both rehearsals are mandatory. 2. Tickets are on sale in room D173--the registrar's office across from the Front Desk. Students may come by at first period, lunch and after school. Parents may also come in to buy tickets. Each student in good standing (that is with no book debts and fewer than three unexcused absences) receives two free tickets. After that, a student may purchase as many tickets as he or she wants at $15 each ticket. Please no checks. Cash or money order only. Students who have difficulty buying tickets should see their counselor. If you have any further questions regarding tickets, please contact Vice Principal Vernon Walton at (510) 644-4569. 3. There are a limited number of disabled tickets. If you are interested in obtaining one, please contact our Student Activities Director, Edith Jordan, at (510) 644-8990. Only one person may accompany each disabled guest in the disabled seating area. 4. Parking is limited close to the theater. The school will run a shuttle bus from BHS starting at 3:30 p.m. There will be two passenger loading zones for dropping off passengers at the Greek Theater. Southbound traffic can drop off in the bus zone across from the Greek Theater. Northbound traffic can drop off in the bus zone just north of the Greek Theater. Disabled persons with wheelchairs will be allowed to drop off on a service road at the north side of the Greek Theater. The service road will be open only for wheelchair drop offs. UCPD will have signs posted to indicate the location of the loading zones. 5. Graduates arrive at 4 p.m. Families should plan on arriving early as the theater fills up rapidly. Overflow is accommodated on the grassy slope above the theater. Bring something soft to sit on and, this being Berkeley, sunscreen, hats and sweaters for when the fog rolls in. 6. How long? The ceremony will keep going until roughly 7:30. But do not count on corralling your graduate right away. There is an exuberant gathering of kids hugging and kissing. It takes maybe half an hour to get your kid. 7. Enjoy yourself. Berkeley High graduations are really wonderful. The BHSDG is seeking parents with financial, accounting or bookkeeping expertise. Specifically, BHSDG needs: (1) An auditor to perform a voluntary audit of our records this year and make procedure recommendations; (2) A bookkeeper to perform check-writing and report-generation work on a regular basis (about 2x a week); and, (3) BHSDG Finance Committee members. While Finance Committee members are welcome to seek to be BHSDG board members, it is not required. It is being proposed that BHSDG have a Finance Committee that will meet once a month, oversee the reconciliation of BHSDG finances by reviewing monthly financial reports, and review and recommend financial procedure and policy modifications, as needed. If you know anyone in our community with financial expertise, please recommend them to us. We are particularly seeking parents of incoming 9th and 10th graders for this role, but welcome experienced or knowledgeable help. We are also seeking an auditor to do a one-time voluntary audit, and a bookkeeper to help us on an on-going basis (perhaps 2x/week) to write checks and run monthly financial reports. If we are able to get these services on a volunteer or low-cost basis, more of our donations go directly to the school. If you can provide these services for us, have an accounting firm recommendation, wish to be on the Finance Committee, or have a parent to recommend be on the Finance Committee, please contact Louise Francis -- louise.francis@comcast.net (parent of incoming 9th grader) or Jennifer Burroughs jdburroughs@sbcglobal.net. On June, 9, 10 and 11 he needs volunteers to help collect and process textbooks which will be turned in before students exams. 1. Book Hauling. Saturday, June 6. Robert Stiles writes: .. I've been desperately trying to get a fair amount of old textbooks out of the book room. One place will come pick them up for free, but they need to be on a pallet in boxes, shrink wrapped, etc but this isn't possible with our space and manpower available. OK my second thought was get City of Berkeley to bring a bin that I could fill up and they'd haul away, but that's 500 bucks! So, where I am now... There is a recycling center on 2nd / Gilman that has huge bins for paper. I am hoping some parents would be willing to help haul away old workbooks / textbooks for us? Especially any Dads with trucks who have been just waiting for such an opportunity... I am hoping we can accomplish this task on Saturday morning, June 6 from 10am to 12. Please contact me if you can help. 2. Book Collecting. Every year Berkeley High loses thousands and thousands of dollars due to lost and damaged textbooks. In the past our book budget has been $300,000 annually. Roughly a third was devoted to replacing textbooks: science books which cost up to $150, Math books which clock in at $90, history books which can go for $100. We are talking big bucks! And, to make it worse, this year we have no money in our budget for replacing lost text books. It is more important than ever that we collect every book possible. But we need your help. We are asking for four volunteers a shift with three shifts a day for three days Tuesday though Thursday, June 9, 10, and 11 The shifts are 10 to 11:30, 11:30 to 1 and 1 to 2:30. Please let Robert know when you can come help (and, if it works take more than one shift!).
