BUSD Web Site: www.berkeley.k12.ca.us At the board meeting on June 24, 2009 the Board discussed the following items: Report on Closed Session: The Board discussed Public Employment/Appointment, approving Mr. Sterling Bruner as the new principal of the Berkeley Adult School. The Board discussed Liability Claims, approving Settlement Authority in Claims No# 09-17 and 09-18; approved payment of $125 in Claim No# 21, rejecting claims 09-22 through 09-26 with no action on Claim No. 09-25. The Board also discussed Collective Bargaining; Public Employee Discipline/Dismissal/ Release & Evaluation; with no action taken. Approval of Agenda: The Board approved the agenda, pulling Consent Items 3.3-C Approval to Apply for CPA Grant from PG&E for further discussion, moving Action Items 2.1-A Agreement Between BUSD and BFT; 3.2-A Approval of School Safety Plans and 5.2-A Approval of Measure BB 2009-10 Annual Plan. All Items on the Consent Calendar were approved. Action Items 2.1-A Agreement between BUSD and Berkeley Federation of Teachers. The Board approved the agreement between the BUSD and the Berkeley Federation of Teachers (BFT) after moving the item to the Consent Calendar. After many negotiation sessions, a tentative agreement for a two year contract was reached. The contract is in effect from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2010. The contract provides a 1% salary increase effective for the 2008-09 school year. ** 3.1-A Berkeley High School Schedule for 2009-10 The Board approved a modified Bell Schedule for Berkeley High School for the 2009-10 school year, establishing a dedicated time for professional development for teachers. The new schedule is available online at the BHS and the BUSD websites. ** 3.2-A Approval of School Safety Plans The Board approved the School Safety Plans for 2009-10 (moving the item to the Consent Calendar). Each California school must have and maintain an individual safety plan at each school site. The plan is comprised of various community, agency, and school resources to ensure proper response to any emergency. ** 3.3-A Approval of Berkeley High School Site Plan The Board approved the 2009-10 BHS Plan for Student Achievement. ** 5.1-A Approval of Sale of 2031 Sixth Street Facility Resolution No. 09-70 The Board approved the sale of a BUSD owned facility located at 2031 Sixth Street, in a combined long-term lease/sale to the City of Berkeley, for use by the Over 60 Health Center (Now known as LifeLong Medical Center). The Board approved the surplus status of this property on March 26, 2008. ** 5.2-A Approval of Measure BB 2009-10 Annual Plan The Board approved the Measure BB 2009-10 Annual Plan (moving the item to the Consent Calendar) as recommended by the Facilities Maintenance and Security Committee (FMSOC) on June 4, 2009. ** 5.1-A Approval of Five Year Lease to City of Berkeley for the Oregon Street Gymnasium The Board approved the five year lease of the Oregon Street Gymnasium, a BUSD owned facility to the City of Berkeley. The COB has been using the gymnasium to provide services to Berkeley youth for the past sixty years, and the current lease expires this year. The COB will continue to pay the BUSD one dollar each year. ** Public Hearing The Board adjourned the regular meeting at 8:10pm and opened a Public Hearing for Conference Item 4.1-CF 2009-10 Adopted Budget. With no comments from the public, the Hearing was closed at 8:10pm and the regular meeting resumed. Conference Item 4.1-CF? 2009-10 Adopted Budget The Board reviewed, discussed and approved the 2009-10 Annual Budget, Budget Assumptions, Multi-year Projections and Assumptions. ** NOTE: Because the Budget was approved at this meeting, the Special Meeting tentatively scheduled for June 29, 2009 has been canceled. Information Items 1.1-I? Student Proposal from Berkeley High School The Board planned to reviewed and discuss concerns brought to the Board in Public Comment on June 10, 2009 by Berkeley High students regarding ongoing racial issues and a current issue of racist behavior displayed by BHS students. Because the students were not aware that the item had been placed on the agenda they were not present.? The Board and the Superintendent will reach out for other ways to communicate with them. Principal Jim Slemp committed himself to working with the student leadership to address these issues and their recommended solutions during the 2009-10 school year. Included in the Board Packet is the students' document, outlining their concerns and ideas for solutions. ** 1.2-I? First Year Accomplishments of the 2020 Vision Planning Team The Board heard a presentation from Superintendent Huyett and team member Michael Miller on the significant work accomplished in the first year of the 2020 Vision Planning Team's work. ** 3.1-I? Textbook Adoption for AP and IB Upper Level Spanish Courses at BHS The Board accepted El mundo 21 hispano textbook for the IB and AP courses at Berkeley High school?for adoption. ** 3.2-I? Special Education IEP Compliance Report The Board accepted a report on Special Education IEP Compliance for Information. ** 5.1-I?
